London serviced apartment trials new Green Initiative

Citadines Prestige Trafalgar Square London, one of three serviced apartment brands in The Ascott Limited’s global portfolio, confirmed a new water-saving toilet is on trial this month as part of the company’s commitment to the environment.

If successful, the new system has the potential to save almost three million litres of water per annum in one residence alone.

Caroma’s Profile 5 range of toilet suites has been selected for its design concept whereby water used for hand-washing is recycled into the cistern for flushing.

The benefit is an immediate 50% reduction in water use by guests and staff, saving more than 400 litres per apartment per week (based on 2 sharing, 6 flushes per person per day). Additional advantages are a stylish streamlined space-saving design, a quiet soft-closing seat, and an integrated dual-flush push button and spout combination, also designed to reduce water use.

Said Rebecca Hollants van Loocke, Ascott’s regional general manager (UK), “We are constantly striving to reduce water and energy consumption and if the trials prove positive as I believe they will, there is the potential to install the new system in all 187 studios and apartments.

“Assuming a conservative 70% year-round occupancy, this could help us reduce water consumption by two to three million litres per annum. And that’s at just one property.

“We currently operate a total of 966 studios and apartments across seven residences in London alone. Doing the maths and given time, that’s a lot of water we can save.”

In 2012 Ascott launched The Green File, an internal policy to address environmental, health and safety issues.

At the same time the company put in place a team of green managers to implement the initiatives at every level.  Citadines Prestige Trafalgar Square London relaunched in February 2012 complete with BREEAM certification.

Ascott was Highly Commended for the Re:locate Green Acheivement Award 2011/12. Look out for this year’s Re:locate Awards shortlist, which will be out in the Spring 2013 issue.
