The 218m-tall Newfoundland Tower, which has been dubbed ‘Diamond Tower’ due to the three-storey high steel diamond shapes covering the façade, will house 566 flats, a first floor restaurant, ground floor shops.

Half way up the tower there are plans for a health and leisure facility as well as swimming pools. A new bridge will also be created to provide pedestrian access to the tower, which will provide 67,000m² of floorspace in total. Designed for developer Canary Wharf Group, the skyscraper will only by slightly shorter than Cesar Pelli’s iconic 235m-tall One Canada Square.

It is to be built on the site of the Newfoundland car park, bordered by Bank Street and Westferry Road, and replaces a Patel Taylor designed scheme in 2008 which centred on a hotel and serviced apartments. The plans follow hot on the heels of approval for Squire & Partners 239m-tall, 75-storey mixed-use City Pride tower, which would be the second-highest habitable building in the UK if built today.
